Who is Ray Tomlinson?

Ray Tomlinson is widely regarded as the “Father of Email”. His invention of the email system in the early 1970s revolutionised the way we communicate and paved the way for the modern digital age. In this post, we will explore who is Ray Tomlinson, his life and his contributions to the development of email as we know it today.

Who is Ray Tomlinson?

Tomlinson was born in Amsterdam, New York in 1941. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. After graduating, he worked for a number of companies, including IBM and BBN Technologies, before joining the research and development team at ARPANET.

In 1971, Tomlinson was working on a project to develop a way for users to send messages to one another over ARPANET. He came up with the idea of using the @ symbol to separate the user’s name from the name of their computer, creating the first email address. He also developed the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which allowed messages to be sent from one computer to another.
